The Relationship Between Self-Esteem and Suicide in Gambling Disorder: A Review

Gambling disorder represents a multidimensional psychopathology characterized not only by profound financial and social consequences, but also by severe erosion of self-esteem and a markedly elevated risk of suicide. This review examines the strong and destructive association between self-esteem and suicidal tendencies among individuals with gambling disorder. Empirical evidence indicates that suicide rates among individuals with gambling disorder are substantially higher than those observed in the general population, and that one of the primary mechanisms underlying this heightened risk is a pronounced decline in self-esteem. Financial losses, deterioration of social reputation, and intense feelings of guilt and shame associated with gambling behavior profoundly disrupt individuals’ self-perception, thereby creating a fertile ground for suicidal behavior. Findings from the existing literature further suggest that the negative correlation between self-esteem and suicidal ideation in gambling disorder is stronger than that observed in other psychiatric populations. In light of these findings, effective treatment approaches should move beyond an exclusive focus on behavioral change and incorporate interventions to restore self-esteem, such as schema therapy, self-compassion–based interventions, and family involvement. In conclusion, the reconstruction of the self should be considered a central therapeutic target in order to reduce suicide risk and achieve sustainable recovery in the treatment of gambling disorder.
