The Predictive Effect of Childhood Traumas on Suicide, Self-Harm and Body Perception of the Self-Destructive Male Convicted and Imprisoned Individuals

In this study, the relationship between childhood traumas and self-harm behavior, suicidal behavior, and body image among male convicted and detained individuals who engage in self-harm behavior was examined. In addition, the predictive effect of childhood traumas on these variables was investigated. The research was conducted using a correlational survey model, and the population consisted of male individuals incarcerated in penal institutions in Türkiye. The sample of the study consisted of 384 male convicted and detained individuals in Tarsus No. 2 T-Type Closed Penal Institution. Participants were selected through purposive sampling. According to the findings, while a significant difference was found only in body image levels according to educational status, suicidal behavior, adverse childhood experiences, self-harm, and mindfulness levels differed significantly according to illegal substance use status and age of onset of substance use. Furthermore, positive significant relationships were identified between adverse childhood experiences and suicidal behavior, self-harm, and negative body image, whereas a negative significant relationship was found with mindfulness. Regression analyses revealed that adverse childhood experiences significantly predicted suicidal behavior, self-harm, and body image. In line with the findings, it is recommended that trauma-focused psychosocial intervention programs be developed for male convicted and detained individuals. Such interventions may contribute to reducing risks such as suicidal behavior, self-harm, and negative body image that may arise from childhood traumas, while also enhancing individuals’ levels of psychological well-being.
